A smaller production cuvée, the 2017 Cornas Vin Noir offers a slightly more saturated purple hue as well as sensational notes of blackcurrants, burning embers, smoked earth, new leather, and game nuances. It's rich, powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, with building tannins on the palate. This blockbuster has incredible depth, as well as character, and tastes like the essence of this appellation. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15+. Enough can’t be said about the quality now coming from the domaine of Stéphane Robert. Both his reds and whites are world-class in every sense.

Hints of smoke accent black cherries and cassis on the nose of the 2017 Cornas Vin Noir. It's full-bodied and velvety on the palate, with rosemary and mint notes on the long, chewy finish. I suppose that it's too clean and plush for traditionalists, but it's one delicious Cornas.

Brilliant magenta. Powerful, mineral-driven aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, candied violet, olive paste and exotic spices. Densely packed and lively in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors that unfold slowly with air and show superb delineation. The blue fruit and floral notes drive an impressively long, juicy finish given framework by fine-grained, slow-building tannins.

From 80- to100-year-old vines. Thick, glossy and rich – but tightly knotted too, with precious little fragrance escaping. Fulfils the Cornas adage of rusticity. (RH)
