Tasting notes
An equal blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, the 2017 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain has a simple but satisfying bouquet of dark cherries and crushed strawberries. The palate is well balanced. Here the Pinot Noir is more expressive than the Gamay, finally reverting to something almost Fleurie-like on the blueberry finish. Delicious.

Aromas of red cherries, raw cocoa and dried flowers introduce the 2017 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain l'Exception, a medium-bodied, mouthwatering wine, framed by light, chalky tannins that represent an unusually affordable introduction to the house style of one of Burgundy's great domaines.
Barrel sample of final blend. 89-year-old vines on gravel and sandy soil that suits the Gamay/Pinot field blend – both varieties reach maturity at the same time. Plants behave like a population and harmonise. Lots of communication between the plants, as between trees – definitely via the roots and perhaps also above ground? Perfect marriage of the two varieties. Sweet and inviting on the nose, intense red fruits. Pure juicy cherry but with depth and shape and utterly moreish. Just delicious and irresistible. Concentrated yet lively with smooth tannins and great freshness. (JH)
