Tasting notes
This auction lot once again originates from a south-facing slope but reflects very early picking. Scents of lime and grapefruit zests and coriander seed anticipate the pungency but also the brightly citric juiciness displayed on a firm yet delicate palate. Hints of nettle and fresh ginger contribute invigoratingly incisive bite on an ultra-buoyant, vibrant, refreshing finish that manages to hide high residual sugar.

The 2017 Kupp Kabinett Fass 5 (Versteigerung) is from the pre-selection of the Grosses Gewächs and turned out as the best fuder that year. The nose is very clear, fine, ripe and less sponti-scented than a fresh bottling. On the palate, this is a dense, concentrated and well-structured Kabinett with a mouth-filling and charmingly round texture though the acidity is seriously sharp and fresh as a laser beam or a Japanese knife. This wine was auctioned in Trier in September last year. Tasted in June 2019.
How can a wine be this light and concentrated at the same time? It is exactly this miracle that makes this such a great Kabinett! Slightly toasty, but the citrus and apples are much stronger. Staggering energy at the enormously racy and off-dry finish. Drink or hold.
