Tasting notes
The 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Monna Lisa was the highlight of this vertical tasting. Revealing aromas of kirsch, fresh leather, balsamic herbs, and pine on the nose, the palate offers a good deal of freshness and has more verticality, with a medium to full-bodied frame, refined tannins, even acidity, and a long, silky finish. It’s showing beautifully now, and while I don’t see it improving much further, it should have a solid plateau over the coming 8 or more years.

Vignamaggio has done a fabulous job with their 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva di Monna Lisa, a wine that captures the pedigree of this great Tuscan vintage. Rich and beautifully layered, yet light on its feet, the 2010 captivates all the senses with its striking perfume, gorgeous fruit and impeccable tannins. Dark red cherries, licorice, savory herbs, cloves and new leather resonate on the warm, expressive finish. The addition of 10% each Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon has given the Monna Lisa additional depth and complexity, but it is still the Sangiovese that is front and center.
