Opening with aromas of plums, wild strawberries and blood orange mingling with lifted top notes of rose petals, peonies and warm spices, the 2017 Marsannay Clos du Roy is a medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered wine that's supple and textural, its enveloping core of fruit underpinned by rich but ripe tannins and succulent acids.

I adore Sylvain Pataille’s wines, but rarely get a chance to drink them. His 2017 Marsannay Clos du Roy is fabulous with the chicken. Light in body, but with terrific savoriness from the whole clusters, the Marsannay has plenty of depth to match its understated, nuanced personality. What a gorgeous wine.

The 2017 Marsannay Clos du Roy had been racked a month before my visit and was due to be returned to barrel for another six months. It contains 100% whole bunches - not that you can detect a single stem on the fulsome, generous bouquet of red cherries mixed with strawberry and raspberry. The fresh, vibrant palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and one of the most precise finishes among Pataille’s reds this year. Classy.

Iron-rich clay on degraded limestone. 100% whole bunch. Mid cherry red. Intensely aromatic with wild dark-red and almost black fruit. Spicy and so full of energy. Dry and minerally/rocky with great finesse on the palate, in structure and complex flavours. Dry with tannins like layers of paper. Long and refined without being seductive (yet). (JH)
