The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a mixture of red and black fruit, plus hints of damp woodland and truffle lingering on the sidelines. The palate is well balanced with red currant and cranberry fruit on the entry, a fine bead of acidity and touches of Chinese five-spice and sage toward the finish. Fine.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a perfumed, intense bouquet of vivacious red berry fruit with a subtle undergrowth character. The palate is medium-bodied, offering firm tannin, darker fruit than some other growers’ Village Cru, good density, and a touch of spice toward the finish. It will deserve three to five years in bottle before that tannin loses its edges.

Saturated ruby-black in hue, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers up aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, licorice, rose petal and expresso roast, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and dense, with surprising reserves of fine-grained extract, succulent acids and an expansive finish. It's unusually rich and concentrated in the context of the vintage.

From 2 ha (nearly 5 acres), including >1 ha of upslope village vineyard and 0.1 ha (a quarter of an acre) each of premier cru blocks Les Fuées and Les Baudes. Racked twice cask to cask. Frosted in 2016 so higher yields and more green harvest needed – unusually. Almost had frost on the same day in 2017. Very warm May, hence earlier picking from 2 September. Nice warm dry summer, no rot. 15% new oak. Both ripe and savoury on the nose. Very ripe but very fresh. Silky tannins with lovely fruit density. Deep fruited and so supple. Juicy and fresh. (JH)
