Tasting notes
This is a stunner and a wine that has miraculously changed little since I first tasted it upon release. The Fattoria le Pupille 2016 Poggio Valente remains linear and tight with a very crisp, almost crunchy quality of fruit. Bright tones of cassis and wild cherry are framed by crushed mineral and toasted spice. The acidity kicks in at the end to keep the mid-weight palate refreshed.

100% Syrah. Five months skin contact. Sweeter than the 2015. And still pretty tarry and closed, with some inkiness on the end. But with a savoury end. More vintage-dominated than variety-dominated. A little too ripe? (JR)
The 2016 Poggio Valente is a total knockout. Ample and resonant, with tremendous richness, the 2016 is fabulous from the very first taste. A whole rush of Sangiovese aromas and flavors build as this potent, full-bodied, pure Sangiovese shows off its considerable power. Hints of tobacco, cedar and mint add the closing shades of dimension. The 2016 was aged in 500-600L. French and Slovakian oak, with a touch of Hungarian and Austrian wood for greater complexity.
Extremely floral and perfumed with blueberry, chocolate and violet aromas. Full body. Very silky and refined texture with a gorgeous berry and cherry aftertaste. Finely textured. Drink now.
