FINE+RARE, Sep 2019

Having tasted this wine in Montalcino with Carlo and Bianca Ferrini earlier this year, we completely agree with the Wine Advocate's assessment that it is nuanced and Burgundian style Brunello. The 2014 vintage was more challenging than recent warmer vintages before it, but there is no doubt that top producers made fantastic wines in this vintage, Carlo Ferrini being at the very top of this list. Anyone who appreciates seductively perfumed wines with amazing poise, tension and finesse will find a lot to love in this vintage and this wine in particular. Carlo Ferrini earned his reputation as one of Italy's most esteemed winemakers through his consulting for top producers including Casanova di Neri, San Leonardo and Petrolo. He released his first own label Brunello di Montalcino in the 2009 vintage. He waited until he found the perfect piece of land: a single site vineyard in a secluded spot with fantastic exposition facing Mount Amiata in the south of the region, near Poggio di Sotto. A tiny production in most vintages, in the 2014 vintage quantities were especially limited. He almost didn't make it at all, but in the end decided to use his very best grapes to produce a mere 2,500 bottles. Wonderful aromatic nose of dried and smoked herbs, small berry fruit, liquorice and petrichor. Although elegant, there is a depth and a warmth to the perfume, which follows through to the silky, beautifully poised palate, with super concentration of flavour, elegant texture and fresh bright acidity. A really beautiful expression of Sangiovese from one of the true masters of the variety.

Carlo Ferrini is especially proud of this wine, made in a difficult vintage. Just 2,500 bottles made rather than the usual 8 – 10,000. ‘I’m convinced that every year you need the courage to produce something’, he says. It’s a little sweet. Very deep colour for the vintage. Red wine nose rather than Brunello. Edgy, briary, rather rough tannins on the end. A bit light on local character but very good for the vintage. Drying finish. (JR)

Carlo Ferrini's Giodo 2014 Brunello di Montalcino proudly defies the poor expectations of the vintage. Many see the 2014 vintage as problematic, but it did in fact outperform in many unexpected situations. This wine speaks to the more nuanced and Burgundian side of Brunello. It offers delicate berry notes with wild cherry, rose hip, licorice, grilled herb and toasted aniseed. In the mouth, this is a polished and tightly textured expression with silky tannins and long, streamlined appeal. I am very happily surprised by this beautiful wine (but would recommend a shorter drinking window compared to previous vintages).
