No whole bunch. 25 months in oak (75% new). Oldest vines in Australia, and the oldest Syrah in the world. Just over one hectare. Planted by a Prussian settler (escaping persecution at home). 350 cases a year. Pungent stemmy notes with candied black fruit, nettles and black cherry syrup. Rich, sweet oak spice gives a long, oak finish. Very tender tannins. So Barossa, and so charming! Long meaty persistence. Manages to encapsulate the grape and the origin in perfect harmony. (RH)

In the few months since I first tasted it, the Langmeil 2014 Shiraz 1843 Freedom has opened considerably, and it now appears much more approachable than I previously thought. It's savory yet sweetly fruited at the same time, offering hints of raspberry to go along with notes of vanilla, cedar and mint. For a full-bodied, richly concentrated wine, it's remarkably supple and elegant, with a long, silky finish.

Bright violet. Smoky, mineral-accented black and blue fruit, floral pastille scents, along with suave cola and vanilla flourishes. Sappy and impressively concentrated; plush blueberry, cherry liqueur and fruitcake flavors blend power and finesse with a deft hand and pick up a violet nuance with air. Finishes extremely long and sweet, displaying harmonious tannins and resonating dark fruit and spice character.
