There is still just enough wood present to merit mentioning as it frames the herbal tea-inflected blend of both red and dark currant scents that are cut with leather and underbrush nuances. The supple medium-bodied flavors possess reasonable though not distinguished mid-palate concentration before terminating in a lingering if slightly attenuated finish. The supporting tannins are sufficiently firm that this youthfully austere effort will need at least a few more years of keeping first. A Clos des Epeneaux of relative finesse. (Outstanding)

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru feels just a little flat on the nose; it’s clean but needs to convey more energy. The palate is fleshy with lower acidity than its peers – a Pommard that is "open for business." Sweet with candied orange peel and black pepper on the finish. Fine, but not long-term. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru offers attractive red berry fruit, undergrowth and tea leaf aromas that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, fresh acidity, classic in style with a plenty of blood orange and zesty notes, a touch of sous-bois towards the finish. "Old school" after tasting the 2018, 2019 and 2020, but I really admire this, perhaps more than the '18.
