(50% of the fruit was lost to frost, with the vines picked very late; this wine began in new oak but Lignier racked it into his own two-year-old barrels last May): Dark ruby-red. Very rich, dark nose combines black fruits and dark chocolate. Fat, oaky, chewy and sweet; a big wine but heavier than those vinified by Lignier, even a bit brutal. This is 14% alcohol and it shows it. Finishes with big, tongue-dusting tannins and a slightly ponderous quality.

The 2016 Nuits St Georges les Didiers Cuvée Hospice de Nuits had been racked from its new barrel the previous June and put into a used barrel by Laurent Lignier to reduce the impact of the wood. It has a generous bouquet with ample black cherry, blueberry and violet scents, the remainder of its élevage hopefully putting a rein on the oak influence. The palate is medium-bodied and here I must say that the oak exerts too much of an influence, slightly figgy toward the extravagant (for the vintage) finish. Enjoyable but it is certainly cut from a different cloth compared to Laurent Lignier's other cuvées.

A pungent nose of reduction and wood toast dominates the fruit today. Otherwise there is fine richness to the velvety and impressively concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess a succulent mouthfeel that contrasts against the firm, mineral-inflected and wonderfully long finish. This is really very good and provided you have some patience, it should amply repay extended keeping - Allen Meadows (91-93)
