FINE+RARE, Nov 2018

2017 has been a great success story in Chablis, with critics calling it the best vintage since the epic 2014. Producer Samuel Billaud is one of the young vignerons whose spellbinding wines are putting him in the same bracket as the likes of Raveneau and Dauvissat. Samuel was the joint owner of the historic Domaine Billaud Simon until the estate was sold to Faiveley. After the sale Samuel acquired his choice of historic sites of the property and has been producing some stunning Chablis Premier Cru and Grand Cru cuvees ever since. His production of 1er Cru Fourchaume (one of the more powerful top Premier Cru sites with the same south-west exposure as the Grand Crus) is a minuscule 900 bottles and we are thrilled to have been given the exclusive allocation of this rare cuvee. Fragrant white flowers, lemon oil and chalky stone mineral aromas lead to an extremely elegant palate which has a lovely silky textural quality and a generous concentration of pear, citrus and honeydew melon fruit. Whilst the palate starts broad and generous it becomes more and more focused on the back palate displaying a structural, mineral finish.
