The 2015 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru, a 0.68-ha monopole of the domaine , has quite a modern, almost Martinborough-inspired bouquet with very clean blackberry and raspberry aromas, the oak nicely integrated if just missing the complexity of some of its peers. The palate is sappy and ripe on the entry, very clean and correct, and quite pure if lacking some personality on the finish. Competent rather than memorable; maybe a Volnay playing it safe? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil is one of the insiders’ picks in the range this year, opening in the glass to reveal notes of red fruit, raw cocoa, loamy soil and a light application of new wood. On the palate, it’s sappy, medium to full-bodied and fine-grained, with nice energy that carries through the tense, youthfully chewy finish. This seems to be shutting down but looks to have a good future.
Very dark crimson. Rich, ripe, even rather toasty nose and very luscious, concentrated fruit. A wine that is clearly more influenced by the vintage than the vineyard, a Monopole for Yvon Clerget. Well made and vigorous but already charming and easy to drink. Pretty good persistence. A charmer. Almost sweet. (JR)
