Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champgain 2011 from Benjamin Leroux has a reserved bouquet with an attractive marine influence developing, but the nose deteriorates in the glass. The palate is balanced with a rather malic opening, well-judged, keen acidity, a gentle build in the mouth toward a slightly herbaceous and short finish.

Bright medium yellow. Subtle fruits and vanillin oak on the pure nose. Round, supple and fairly rich, offering noteworthy depth and a lovely sweet touch to the peach and spice flavors. Very Puligny but not at all austere. Finishes broad and mouthfilling, with excellent length and lift. This is already quite accessible.
The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain is an addition to the range, and also one of the best wines among these 2011. A gorgeous, layered bouquet melds seamlessly into a core of white and yellow stone fruits. The Champ Gain is a model of precision and pure class. It shows surprising nuance considering the precocious vintage.
