Muskmelon, mango and apricot on the nose – and more so on the glossy, oily, drippingly rich palate – signal fruit of advanced though healthy ripeness and offer a marked contrast with the fruit character of Thomas Haag’s Grosses Gewächs from this site. Fortunately, a zesty, bright influx of fresh lime enlivens the lingering, prominently sweet finish.

The 2017 Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is stunningly coolish and stony on the flinty nose with its bright fruit aromas. Lush, sweet, concentrated on the palate, this is an elegant and well-structured but very sweet Spätlese that needs at least 10 years to gain more finesse and complexity. Tasted in March 2019.

Lovely nutty, sunflower-seeds and lightly grilled-almonds nose. Plus springtime blossom. And then just a shower of petals-in-sugar on the palate. Plus the ripest of clementines. Delicate, translucent and yet framed in steel and glass. Citrus and stone fruit and gurgling delight. (TC)

RS 85 g/l and no botrytis – which is what he prefers if possible. A little more smoky/mineral than the Niederberg Helden Spätlese. But still a pure apricot and lemon fruit intensity. Mouth-filling sweetness, gentle viscosity, both balanced by the crisp acidity. (JH)
