The 2016 Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru from Leroux stands as one of the finest bottled wines that I have tasted from this producer. It offers copious red and blue fruit on the nose - redcurrant jam, blueberry and fleeting cassis aromas, very well defined with a floral component more conspicuous than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This delivers the weight and intensity you expect from a Grand Cru, with countervailing finesse and refinement that can only derive from the most propitious terroirs. Extremely long on the sorbet-like finish with hints of cracked black pepper, such is the crystalline nature of this wine that you could broach a bottle now and not be overcome with guilt. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2016 tasting.

Bright, dark red. Reticent aromas of purple fruits, licorice and rose petal. Sappy and penetrating in the mouth, but more backward and imploded than the Clos de la Roche. A distinctly dark, even youthfully brooding style for Clos Saint-Denis but with excellent depth and juicy lift. Finishes firm and long. This wine is going to require patience.

The 2016 Clos St Denis Grand Cru has a clean and fresh bouquet with a delicate floral aspect that complements the vibrant red berry fruit. This conveys a sense of class and nobility. You are in the presence of a serious Burgundy! The palate is silky smooth with filigreed tannin, pitch-perfect acidity and a sensual, long and crystalline finish. This may well be the best 2016 from Benjamin Leroux. This is quite brilliant and up there among the best I have tasted from this grand cru in barrel.
