FINE+RARE, Aug 2019

Owner Darioush Khaledi arrived in the United States in 1977 just before revolution erupted in his native Iran. He built a successful career as a retail entrepreneur, yet the rich cultural and winemaking heritage of his hometown of Shiraz eventually inspired him to pursue the new American dream presented by Napa Valley in the 1990s. An avid fan of Bordeaux wines, Darioush found the ideal conditions he was seeking in the cooler southern part of Napa Valley in Mount Veeder and Oak Knoll. He set about capitalising on the ripeness of Californian fruit whilst retaining the cooler climate Bordeaux inspiration. Combining the best of old and new, Darioush is a winery where the attention to technical detail is perfectly combined with a passion for artistic flair and hedonistic enjoyment. The 2013 vintage is the perfect expression of this harmony. As the Wine Advocate's William Kelley described, "the hallmark of 2013 is a marriage of ripe fruit with savoury qualities modern California Cabernet Sauvignon so frequently lacks." Many agree that the "California Cabernet 2013 vintage is quite simply the finest".Oozing with aromatic intensity, this Napa Cabernet is a blend of mountain and valley floor fruit. The mountain fruit brings complex aromas of smoky tea, tobacco and sweet clove spice. The palate has wonderfully pristine blackcurrant cassis and blueberry fruit, structural tannins yet very even set and well-integrated with the vibrancy and intensity of the fruit. The added touch of savoury spice makes this a Napa Cabernet that hasn’t pushed the ripeness over at the expense of finesse.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has plenty of crème de cassis, a broad, deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, moderate tannin, and a long finish. This is a 15-year wine.
