Cask sample. Mid crimson. Light stony/mineral aroma, the tannins just a touch firmer than in La Justice but still remarkably smooth without being prematurely soft. Gentle and elegant with a long dark-fruited and fresh finish. (JH)

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Racine du Temps, which comes from 90-year-old vines, has an attractive bouquet with plenty of red and black fruit, intermixed with iris and incense, just a touch of tobacco emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a touch of brown spice on the entry, harmonious and refined with a fine bead of acidity toward the fresh and quite graceful finish. I like the cut of its jib (as they say), although I'll wait to see whether it is a long-term proposition.
