A restrained nose is comprised by aromas of both red and dark pinot fruit that are cut with notes of earth, iron and a whiff of spice. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the focused and attractively persistent finish. Worth checking out. Both more firmly structured and more concentrated than the Mercurey Les Montots, the 2016 Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux offers up complex notes of cherries, black currants, game bird, rich soil and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, juicy and youthfully chewy, with some structuring tannin that will demand a few years in the cellar.
