The 2016 Saint Joseph La Cotte Sud offers more graphite and minerality as well as tons of cassis and blackberry fruits, spice box, medium to full body, present tannins, and a big finish. This rich, mouthfilling beauty will be better with a year or two in bottle and shine for 8-10 years. These 2016s and 2017s from the Courbis brothers are terrific follow-ons to their brilliant 2015s. The 2016 Cornas are some of the finest in the vintage and have sexy, ripe profiles that offer more pleasure than most. The 2017s are in the same ballpark, with slightly more upfront charm and approachability. In addition to the Cornas releases, this team is turning out some heavenly Saint Josephs!

The only one of Courbis’s 2016s from Saint Joseph to really require any sort of cellaring is the 2016 Saint Joseph La Cotte Sud. This is sourced from 25-year-old vines planted on granitic, south-facing slopes and will spend 18 months in 50% new oak before being bottled in June 2018. This medium to full-bodied Syrah offers up hints of espresso and peppery spice layered atop ripe, plummy fruit. It’s supple upfront, then firms up on the long finish. Give it a couple of years in the cellar, and drink it over the next decade.

New cuvée in 2016. From granitic soil. Purity and elegance with just the right amount of toasted oak on the palate. Polished, aromatic and fresh. (RH)
