Both nose and palate here are dominated by a remarkable array of mineral elements: char, alkali, iodine and salts. There is also an aromatic intimation of pip and pit piquancy that subsequently take on prominence. The results skirt austerity thanks to the saliva-inducing talent of salinity and to a generously juicy alliance of Meyer lemon, pear and white peach. The feel is flatteringly satiny, while the vibrant, mouthwatering sustained finish brings vivid oyster liquor to bear on vivacious bright fruit. (A bottle that had been opened for four days was predictably less vividly fruity, but was even more saline.)

The 2015 Burgberg Riesling GG has a pure and flinty bouquet with ripe fruit, bread aromas and herbal notes. Full-bodied and racy this is a pure, piquant and elegant Riesling with great balance, complexity and lingering salinity. It has very good aging potential.

'Pass the salt, please' is not a request you need to make with this Grosses Gewächs. The sheer mineral intensity of the Burgberg is almost overwhelming, but somehow Caroline Diel has managed to soften the rocky blow with a fine combination of grapefruit, lime and spices. For once the greener elements of spontaneous fermentation have to be content with a support role, but they play it well. (MS)
