The 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Blanc Grand Cru is a vintage I have not tasted since it was in barrel. It has a powerful bouquet that demands attention. With plenty of extracts, it's almost Alsace-like with wet wool, lanolin and white chocolate notes. It is utterly engaging. The palate is well-balanced with an almost Chenin-like quality. Spicier than other vintages I have tasted, it fans out wonderfully on the finish and seems to linger in the mouth. Very impressive.

A fresh, cool and layered nose of vaguely exotic white orchard fruit and florals scents is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious, caressing and suprisingly plump medium weight plus flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the clean and dry finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. While the round and forward character of the mid-palate will permit this to be enjoyed now, it's got the stuffing to repay another 5 to 10 years of keeping.

Returning after parading last year as a Bourgogne Blanc until the vines reached satisfactory maturity, the 2016 Musigny Blanc Grand Cru is comprised of three barrels, none of them new. It has an intriguing bouquet with white flowers, honeysuckle, Cornice pear and orange blossom aromas, plus jasmine with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a resinous texture and you know, if I was served this blind, frankly I would never guess it to be a Chardonnay. It is a sui generis, almost Marsanne-like in flavor profile and texture with touches of spice, ginger and lemongrass toward the finish. This is an absolutely fascinating wine. Welcome back.

Comte de Vogüé was my last of over 100 visits in Burgundy. It almost never happened. Firstly a miscommunication with the time meant that the first visit had to be cancelled. Returning the following day I found that the electricity for the entire village of Chambolle-Musigny had been cut off. Winemaker François Millet and I were preparing to taste at the top of the cuverie stairs when someone must have chucked some money into the meter. Lo and behold the lights came back on. Hoorah!
