Tasted blind. Bright ruby colour. Some nice, fleshy red fruit on the nose here. Warm alcohol on the palate. Chalky and slightly awkward tannin. Unfortunately, the palate does not live up to the promise on the nose. (TP)

The 2017 Couvent des Jacobins is fabulous. Rich and inky, the 2017 possesses tremendous depth and tons of allure. Blackberry jam, mocha, espresso, licorice, chocolate and spice all build in a heady Saint-Émilion that hits all the right notes. The 2017 is not especially subtle, but it packs a serious punch and will drink well right out of the gate. Readers should expect an especially sumptuous style.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Couvent des Jacobins displays notes of baked blackberries, warm plums and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, sautéed herbs and smoked meats. Medium-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm, chewy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing a little hard.

A blend of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Couvent Des Jacobins is a charming, forward Saint-Emilion that has pretty red and black fruits, a touch of incense and spice, medium body, ripe, soft tannins, and solid length on the finish. It has a touch of earth and sappy flowers with time in the glass, has moderate richness and depth, rock-solid balance, and plenty of charm. Give bottles 3-4 years and enjoy over the following decade.
