The 2017 Durfort-Vivens was affected by frost on the western parcels, so the château lost 40% of the production. This has a far superior bouquet to the 2016, very pure with black cherries, red plum, mint and pine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and nicely structured with a touch of pepper and spicebox toward the finish. Despite the frost, this is showing well, elegant and persistent. Bon vin . Tasted at the château.

91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot. Aged 18 months in barrel (60% new oak). Low yield of 17 hl/ha due to frost. Organic and biodynamic (Demeter) certification. Light ruby-garnet hue. Pure and aromatic with red-fruit and floral notes. Palate light- to medium-bodied but lively and pure. Lacks the density of a top year but lovely fruit and freshness. Filigree tannins so smooth and gentle. For more-immediate pleasure. (JL)

The 2017 Durfort-Vivens is fabulous, not to mention one of the under the radar gems of the year. Rich and explosive in feel, the 2017 possesses tremendous intensity in every direction. Sweet floral notes, cedar, mint and spice add shades of nuance as this potent, vertically built Margaux opens up in the glass. In 2017, severe frost took with it 35% of the production. The fruit that survived produced an epic, marvelously rich Durfort-Vivens. Don't miss it.
