Score 16.5/20 · Drink 2023-2028, Jancis Robinson MW, May 2022

56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Hand-picked and put into conical temperature-controlled steel tanks. 17 months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Winemaker: Vincent Millet. TA 3.73 g/l , pH 3.54, RS 2 g/l . One of a range of six second wines from the 2017 vintage. Bottle weight 575 g. Lovely pure nose. Earthy hints, plenty of weight on the palate. Intriguing flavours, good acidity, bright and modern in style. Very good effort for 2017 – manages freshness, leafiness and density well.  GV (AWH)

Tasted blind.  Mid ruby colour. Camphor and cedar on the nose, a hit of spice from oak together with hedgerow fruit. Grippy tannins frame a compact core of juicy red-berry fruit on the palate. There is a hint of fresh blackcurrant together with a little spice. Graphite-lined and slightly leafy on the finish. (TP)

The 2017 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a bit understated relative to some recent vintages, but it is nevertheless very pretty. Floral overtones and cool red berry fruit give the 2017 its distinctive, lifted personality. It is a bit light in structure but it is otherwise very nicely done; I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain fresh.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2017 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is meaty and earthy with baked plums, mulberries, cassis and woodsmoke aromas. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, fresh and soft with a juicy finish. The wine was aged in French oak, 30% new, for 17 months. The blend is 57% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
