2017 Doisy Daene Cuvee l'Extravagant

The Doisy Daëne 2017 L'Extravagant bursts from the glass with a powerful nose of pineapple upside-down cake, apricot tart, allspice and lime blossoms plus an undercurrent of manuka honey and cinnamon toast. The palate is super rich, concentrated and unctuous with a wicked backbone of freshness to counter all that decadence, finishing with great length and depth.

The 2017 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne comes from two tries , one at the end of September and the second during the first week of October. Although it has between 195 to 200gl/L residual sugar, it has a less flamboyant bouquet than recent vintages. This feels much more controlled and focused with pure honeyed fruit laced with white peach, yellow plum and a light resinous scent. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous, unctuous honeyed fruit, mango, persimmon and a little lemon peel that lends tension towards the powerful, show-stopping finish. It lives up to its name. (Readers should note that there is just one and a half barrels instead of the normal three or four.)

The 2017 Doisy-Daëne L'Extravagant could very well turn out to be the wine of the vintage in Sauternes and Barsac. A wine of simply extraordinary balance, L'Extravagant boasts tremendous aromatic presence as well as tons of sheer density. Layers of flavor and texture unfold effortlessly in a majestic, plush wine that simply has it all. Generous and rich, but not in any way excessive, L'Extravagant is a total head-turner. Don't miss it!
