The 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud is absolutely gorgeous. Crushed raspberry fruit, blood orange, mint and white flowers give the 2017 a decidedly exotic aromatic profile. Plump, juicy and caressing on the palate, the 2017 has plenty to offer. The 2017 is a bit wild and eccentric, but it is also incredibly beguiling. As was the case with the en primeur sample, I wish the bouquet had just a bit more focus. Even, so there is plenty of allure.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud opens a little closed and grumpy, soon revealing attractive notes of baked raspberries, kirsch and blackberry preserves plus wafts of mossy bark and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the taut black fruit, finishing with good length.

The 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud is rather underwhelming on the nose, lacking the vivacity and vigour of some of its Right Bank peers. The palate is better with ripe red cherries and raspberry fruit on the entry and a velvety texture. What it lacks is tension and genuine complexity towards the finish, but I can see this offering early-drinking pleasure.

The 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud felt a little over-extracted on the nose with touches of prune infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, smooth in texture with some quality new oak rounding off the edge, although I wonder how much substance lies underneath? Maybe a fine early-drinking Côtes de Castillon?
