FINE+RARE, Jun 2018

Let’s be clear, 2015 is a sensational vintage in Italy. Everywhere we go in Italy, winemakers are waxing lyrical about the 2015s, praising the beautiful growing season in which very little needed to be done in the vineyard, universally producing perfectly ripe, pristine fruit. Now we are now seeing the first smattering of releases (due to maturing restrictions) from the quality region of Barbaresco DOCG . Barbaresco neighbours Barolo and produces a lighter, silkier style of Nebbiolo, a much more approachable style of this cerebral varietal. Produttori del Barbaresco has become synonymous with offering high quality at incredible value. As one of the most important cooperative wineries in Europe, Produttori recognises its own significance in enhancing the reputation of Barbaresco, and this is reflected in the wine produced year after year. Founded by the local village priest in 1958 and now representing 51 small family growers and over 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards, Produttori is a prime example of the sum being greater than its parts. In the exceptional 2015 vintage for Piedmont, the flagship Barbaresco, made from grapes carefully sourced from the most established vineyards in the collective, exceeded our already high expectations. This is a brilliantly expressive wine that any lover of fine Nebbiolo will want in their collection. With great ageing potential, but also already drinking beautifully, we cannot recommend this more. A luminescent ruby colour and a beautifully open and expressive nose of roses and a hint of smoke is followed on the palate by pure, focused and fresh red cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit. This is finished with a hint of mint and a coating of dark chocolate mocha enveloped in smooth silky tannins. Fine balance, freshness, structure, focus and length – this Barbaresco has it all.

I tasted this wine after bottling but before its commercial release. The 2015 Barbaresco will hit the market on September 1st. It was scheduled to be released in October, but because Produttori del Barbaresco is already out of stock of the 2014 Barbaresco, they decided to move this release up and shorten waiting times. I mention that because you definitely don't want to pop the cork too early. The 2015 vintage opens to a visibly darker color and thicker concentration compared to recent past vintages. Next to the upcoming 2016 and 2017 editions, we can expect 2015 to be the most fruit-forward of the three. You get dark tones of plum and blackberry with dry tannins at the rear.
