A wine of remarkable finesse and nuance, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is exceptionally beautiful. The 2008 is refined, silky and nuanced, especially within the context of the vintage. Freshly cut flowers, cedar, tobacco and anise are all beautifully delineated throughout. I am quite impressed with how well the 2008 has come together over the last few years. Two thousand eight will be remembered as the year of the devastating mid-August hail. Quite miraculously, the Poggio al Vento emerged pretty much unscathed.

Tasted blind. Very heavy bottle! Concentrated ruby with narrow orange rim. Timid nose with hints of bacon. On the palate the cherry fruit unfolds and fills the mouth. Bright acidity and powdery tannins. Impressive, poised, complex, gorgeous. (WS)

Violets, dried rose petals, mint, anise and wild cherries are some of the many notes that inform the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento. Utterly beguiling on the palate, the 2008 boasts stunning depth. The 2008 changes constantly in the glass, revealing endless shades of nuance and complexity. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Interestingly, the Poggio al Vento was not hit as hard by hail in 2008 as were many other parcels at Col d'Orcia, so the Poggio al Vento is less explosive and ripe in style than the regular bottling. The 2008 Poggio al Vento is a wine built on finesse.

Another magnificent 2008, this tentative blend of the estate's flagship 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is impeccably layered from start to finish. I hope I can accurately convey with words just how vivid and alive the 2008 Poggio al Vento is, such a rarity for a vintage in which most wines are one-dimensional. Tar, smoke, licorice and menthol cloves meld into a finish laced with baritone depth. The Poggio al Vento is one of the very few 2008s I can say I am truly excited to follow over the coming years, and in the case of this wine, decades.
