Score 92-94/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2018

(35% new oak): Bright, pale yellow with green reflections. Pure but discreet aromas of white peach, honeydew melon and noble wild herbs; less floral than the Chevalier-Montrachet and also showing a lightly vegetal aspect. A step up in concentration but more clenched than the Chevalier-Montrachet, conveying a savory character and an impression of solid dry extract. The slowly rising finish features serious thrust and grip, along with an almost tannic solidity. This wine should expand in bottle and may ultimately surpass the Chevalier-Montrachet but it will require patience. (13.2% alcohol)

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru has a little more energy and mineralité than the Chevalier-Montrachet this year, the terroir more expressive and lending more tension and bite. The palate is fresh and energetic with a fine bead of acidity, impressive weight with a caressing, quite voluminous finish that lingers long. There is something suitably aristocratic about this Montrachet that surpasses the Chevalier-Montrachet.
