Score 88-90/100 · Drink 2020-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Dec 2017

The 2016 Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières (Rouge) has a pretty and more understated bouquet compared to the Saint Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard—vivid red cherries, crushed strawberry and freshly tilled earthy aromas bounding from the glass. The palate is well balanced with good structure, a more masculine and rather broody and serious Santenay with depth and muscle. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

(the six-year-old vines here yielded low-sugar, high-pH grapes but the old vines produced fruit with better balance, according to Lamy): Pale yellow. A bit sharp on the nose, hinting at herbs, mint and metallic minerality. Delivers good lemony energy and cut but comes across as rather skinny, with some unabsorbed acidity. Not my style.
