The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an exuberant bouquet with hints of blueberry infusing the red cherry and crushed strawberry aromas. The oak is more prominent here although it will be subsumed by the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, juicy and rounded towards the finish with a generous black cherry and black olive finish. Quite modern in style, this Gevrey-Chambertin deserves at least three years in bottle. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward bottle age.
