The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyères Grand Cru feels a little loose-knit on the nose with strawberry preserve, raspberry and pot pourri aromas. Pretty, but needs more focus. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins. There is a firm backbone to this Mazoyères. It feels curt and rather blunt on the finish that shows evidence of whole bunch. Hopefully it will flesh out with bottle age. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Charmes Chambertin les Mazoyeres Grand Cru, which is 100% whole cluster from their single parcel of century old vines, has a tightly wound, quite floral bouquet that gradually opens with aeration but remains a little laconic compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red berry fruit, fine mineralité, quite dense (especially toward the second half) with touches of blood orange and spice toward the finish. This gets more interesting as it goes along! Good potential.
About the producer
Based south of Nuits-Saint-Georges in Prémeaux-Prissey, Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999, grouping all of Jean-Claude Boisset’s holdings under one name. The property has a total 40 hectares of vines, with extensive holdings in Vougeot as well as plots in six Grands Crus.
