The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino maintains a bright and vibrant red color in the glass, with a rich and deep bouquet of cherry sauce and clove complemented by hints of worn leather and underbrush. It’s silky in feel yet delicate, with a savory mix of minerals, wild berries and a note of brown spice that only hints at its steady climb to maturity. The 2012 leaves a lasting impression, still a bit grippy and poised, yet leaving the mouth watering for more, as hints of smoke and licorice slowly fade. This is a total pleasure today, and with years of further development to look forward to.

Montalcino Nord (Montosoli). Bluer than most: mid garnet. Chalky nose somehow. Sweet start to the palate. Then it’s very appetising on the finish. Racy and vibrant. Sinewy. (JR)

Simonetta Valiani's Le Chiuse shows very nice results in this vintage. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino opens relatively quickly after being poured into the glass. It opens to soft aromas of ripe cherry and dark fruit with leather, tobacco and spice at the back. The wine is shapely, supple and shows soft contours. This is an approachable Brunello that can easily be consumed in the near term with local Tuscan dishes or oven-roasted pasta. You could wait to cellar age this wine, but why bother? It drinks very nicely just out of the gate.

Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Youthful, shy nose of cherry and a hint of oats. Perfectly built with firm tannins and ripe fruit with real depth and length. Polished, yet muscular. (WS)
