Opaque ruby. Powerful cherry, dark berries, olive and smoky minerals on the highly fragrant nose. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, blackberry, candied violet and spicecake flavors that unfurl slowly on the back half. Shows impressive clarity and finishes on a smoky note, with resonating spiciness and rounded, even tannins that sneak in late.

Green olives and pie cherries mark the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre, which is drawn from the lieu-dit of Côte Rozier. It's medium-bodied, with tart, mouthwatering fruit and a silky finish.

Unquestionably the richest, most concentrated, and impressive in the lineup, the 2016 Côte Rôtie Rose Pourpre is 100% Syrah, all from schist soils, that’s brought up entirely in new barrels. Black fruits, raspberries, crushed flowers, game, and plenty of olive character give way to a full-bodied, rich, concentrated beauty that shows the classic style of the domaine. It’s a terrific effort that’s going to need 3-4 years of bottle age. Located in the northern part of Saint Joseph, this family-run estate has produced a bevy of high quality, noteworthy wines in both 2016 and 2015. Despite seeing plenty of new oak, I nevertheless find a very traditional style in the wines from Gaillard.

Quite a bit of oak spice impressed upon the nose here, which is impressive and open but risks becoming overdone. Then the fruit is absolutely pristine – crunchy, fresh, concentrated black bramble fruits with a touch of earth and mushroom on the finish. (RH)
