TA 5.9 g/l, pH 3.6, RS 173 g/l. Pale-medium amber, with tawny glints. Toasted tobacco, some meaty hints, dark chocolate and dried herb, with subtle caramel cake. Intense sweetness, with balancing acidity, orange-peel fruit, mahogany, walnuts, spice, dark chocolate and toffee. Very long and integrated finish. Exceptional length. Touch of warmth, but what the hell – it is port after all. Glorious! (TJ)

RS 173 g/l. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca. Mahogany brown. Vegetal, earthy, toasted spices, black cherry, thick texture and the most incredible persistence. A venerable veteran, and so much better value than almost any other 1968 on the market. (RH)

The 1968 Single Harvest Tawny, which was bottled in 2017, has a slightly pallid bouquet that just needs more presence: nutmeg, clove, marmalade and smoke, but I would have liked more intensity here. The palate is much better, finally the energy and ambition appears! Here we encounter Chinese 5-spice, dried orange peel, cloves, curry powder and star anise. There is real flourish on the finish, a Tawny that starts slow but ends on a real high. This comes highly recommended. Tasted at the "Big Fortified Tasting" in London.

Green-rimmed, brownish deep tawny. Very fruity, clean nose with only the merest hint of spirit and lots of rancio. Excellent balance of sweetness and tanginess. Vanilla and orange peel. Very long, walnut-flavoured finish. Satisfying. A useful present for those celebrating a fiftieth birthday this year? (JR)
