Tasting notes
The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole is fabulous. Savory aromatics make a strong opening statement, but it is the depth and textural resonance that stand out most. Plum, black cherry, smoke, licorice and underbrush give the wine its dark, brooding personality. In 2014, the Baroncole possesses exceptional aromatic presence as well as persistence, though it is a bit compact on the palate. Its potential, though, is ample.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole is a fragrant and floral expression of 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo. The wine impresses for its delicate approach that segues to a more powerful delivery in terms of structure and texture as the wine warms in the glass. There is a real sense of determination and length here that wraps lavishly over the palate. Dark fruit, blackberry, rose and moist earth characterize the bouquet. I am absolutely delighted by this wine's memorable performance. Only 11,800 bottles were produced.
Cask sample. Gaiole in Chianti. 97% Sangiovese, 3% Canaiolo. Surprisingly dark ruby for this very light, cool and rainy vintage. Balsamic cherry nose with lots of depth. Just a touch of dried fruit, but this is a cask sample so it might be due to oxidation. Gorgeous cherry fruit palate with almost Nebbiolo-like, mouth-filling, coating tannins. Serious, long and tannic. One of the very few Riservas worth their money in this vintage. (WS)
