Freundstück gets exposed to smaller, newer casks as well as receiving the longest stay on its lees of any von Buhl offering. The nose displays lanolin and resin character from wood, along with lichen, moss and a hint of floral sachet typical of the site. The palate is oily and expansive, but with welcome lemon-lime juiciness. The finish grips with zesty citrus underlain by moss-covered stone. But I remain unconvinced that Freundstück’s are the ideal musts to expose to more wood than those of other sites, or that this wine will exhibit the same stamina in bottle as its immediate siblings.

Some of von Buhl's Grosse Gewächse are more influenced by their upbringing in oak than others. With a fragrance of caramel and butterscotch, the Freundstück at this stage says more about wooden packaging than varietal content. This may well change with age; the palate reveals a rich substance of yellow fruit embedded in a generous texture. Traditionalists will not be so amused by this kind of burgundian style of Riesling, but a new generation of wine enthusiasts seems to relish the Francophile approach. (MS)
