Dark crimson. Mild, well-mannered nose. Very smooth and massaged with lots of peppery fruit on the palate and then a refined, dry finish. Strong liquorice notes and drinkable already. Still youthful though with more to come. A fair price for this amount of integrity and refinement. Just a little subdued on the finish. (JR)

The 2004 Quinta do Bomfim comes in at 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is put together nicely. It is a more intellectual Single Quinta than its siblings this issue, but its best features should pay dividends over the long haul in the cellar. Dry and muscular, rather intense and focused, this is not actually quite ready to drink and will certainly benefit more from some cellaring or decanting. The precision and structure here should allow this to age gracefully and acquire more complexity, even if it is "sort of" approachable now. It should continue to improve over the next decade, at the least.

Better fruit purity than the Graham's Malvedos 2001. Tender tannin, fragrant and perfumed – but shortish on the finish. (RH)

Dark, youthful crimson. Creamy nose, relatively evolved but with lots of life. The tannins obtrude only on the end but there is lots of firm fruit on the front palate. Redcurrants, black pepper, liquorice, and even a note of pomegranate. Firm and fine. I'd drink this with cheese reasonably soon rather than leave it for years and years. Muscular. (JR)
