Very much richer-tasting than the crisper 2017. Yet still the same purity of fruit. Crisp and chewy but with very rich fruit quality. (JR)

A little more honeyed on the nose compared with the Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett. Less typically smoky though there is a little bit of that on the palate. Generous in fruit, gentle in texture and wonderfully balanced. Very, very good and GV . (JH)

Something has changed chez Prüm. It is fair to say that in years gone by the very young wines of JJ Prüm where quite difficult to assess because of their wild and funky smell (that we no longer associate with sulphur, but rather the result of spontaneous fermentation). There was none of that with the 2016 Himmelreich Spätlese, which offered a very clean and fresh fragrance of candied orange and totally juicy citrus flavour, supported by animating acidity and tactile mineral edge on the finish. The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese (AP 08 17) is discreet and smoky on the deep, well-defined nose. Juicy-piquant and salty on the well-structured and refreshingly mineral palate, the Himmelreich is tight and expressive, with the sweetness superbly balanced by the spicy, grippy phenols/minerals. This is a really complex Spätlese that is highly stimulating today and will still be so in 20 or 30 years.
