The 2000 Vigna d'Alceo is gorgeous. It is also one of the most open, pliant wines in this tasting. Plums, savory herbs, violets and licorice all flesh out in the glass. Beautifully soft and caressing throughout, the 2000 is a great choice for drinking now and over the next decade. The 2000 is a bit slender next to many of the other vintages, but is balance is exceptional. Sweet, silky tannins round of the finish.

Going back a quarter century to the Castello dei Rampolla 2000 d'Alceo, made with Cabernet Sauvignon in a leading role and Petit Verdot in a supporting role, this wine shows sweetness and thickness with aromas that remind me of prunes and baked plum. The vintage also has a metallic side with iron ore and rusty nail. To the palate, it shows a soft texture and resolved tannins. In terms of its focus and definition, this wine feels looser than the others. The acidity is there, but the mid-palate is broad and rich.

For whatever reason, the full-bodied 2000 Vigna d'Alceo was roaring the day I tasted it. A single vineyard blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, it tastes like the Sammarco on steroids. It boasts a deep purple color in addition to scents of espresso, sweet melted licorice, black currant jam, and toasty oak. There is great intensity, superb purity, and a finish that lingers for nearly a minute. This mythical wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and will age effortlessly for two decades.
