The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum opens to dark concentration and black ruby color. This special selection reveals a higher degree of extraction compared to the Brunello annata. The bouquet offers dried fruit, cherry confit, ash, tar, licorice and some lingering end notes of crushed granite or dry earth. Ambient yeast are used for fermentation and the wine sees five months in barrique with regular stirring of the lees. It then goes into botte grande for three years. Despite that long aging time, it seems to show more wood tannins than it does fruit tannins. That could explain the bitterness you taste on the finish.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Lifted, ripe and concentrated on the nose with a fine oak note. Muscular tannins framing taut cherry fruit. A little drying for the moment, but this is serious stuff in need of age. (WS)
