Score 92/100 · Drink 2020-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2018

Fontodi's 2014 Chianti Classico is one of the most finessed vintages of this wine in recent memory. The combination of the cool growing conditions and a move toward larger oak casks has resulted in a deep yet translucent wine of notable pedigree and class. There is plenty of the typical Panzano richness, but less of the overt weight that has characterized some recent vintages.

The 2014 Chianti Classico is just hitting the market now. This is a light and delicate expression of Sangiovese that delivers floral notes of lavender and violet that are characteristic of a cooler vintage. The wine’s appearance is one mild tone lighter in terms of color and overall concentration. Keeping in theme, the mouthfeel is beautifully driven by tonic freshness and polished elegance.

Panzano. 100% Sangiovese. Youthful ruby. Lifted cherry and cool spice nose. Sweetly concentrated raspberry fruit with coating tannins. A little Nebbiolo-like, yet light and utterly convincing in style and length. (WS)
