The 2015 Grenache Shiraz Mataro is spicy and leaning into its meatiness and umami peppercorns ... great. It's elegant and mid-weight still, and this works beautifully in its favor. Lovely wine. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Blended of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 20% Mataro, the 2015 Grenache Shiraz Mataro displays a medium garnet-purple color and nose of baked cherries, raspberry preserves and warm plums with a smoky/chargrill undercurrent and savory touch of yeast extract. Full-bodied with concentrated flavors in the mouth, it has a solid backbone of firm, ripe tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory.
Proportions are about 70/20/10. 60- to 115-year-old vines. Same winemaking as on all the Powell & Son reds – ie fermented in open concrete vats, aged 12–15 in foudres (25 hl in this case). No fining or filtration. 1,000 cases of 12. Deep cherry red. Rich dark bramble fruit. Creamy, rich with a cool depth of fruit – Grenache is the star here. More red fruit on the palate. Very silky and gentle. Really juicy and lightly voluptuous. Deep, long and very easy to drink – you could drink this all evening. (JH)
