Score 88/100 · Drink 2020-2028, Neal Martin, Aug 2020

The 2016 Montviel offers attractive red berry fruit laced with iron filings and truffle, not powerful but nicely delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp acidity on the entry, and powdery in texture. There is a pleasant black truffle component on the finish, but it comes across a little tart at the moment. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. A bit diffuse on the nose. Sweet and fresh but not mind-blowing in its concentration. Sandpaper tannins. (JR)

A rocking effort that brings the goods, the 2016 Château Montviel is a tiny production cuvée based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels. Surpassing the terrific 2015, it boasts a deep purple color as well as a mammoth bouquet of blackberries, plums, crushed violets, and forest floor. Deep, full-bodied, beautifully textured, yet still lively and weightless on the palate, it’s the real deal and is a brilliant Pomerol to drink over the coming 15-20 years.
