The 2016 Troplong Mondot has quite a powerful bouquet with black plum and boysenberry fruit, violet and cassis, perhaps just a little Napa-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a tannic entry, good depth and is obviously more oaky than subsequent vintages. There are some wood tannins towards the finish that I would just keep an eye on in the future. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s Ten Year On tasting and also at the estate.

Aromas of tar, dark fruit and smoke. The palate is full-bodied with firm, polished, well-delineated tannins and dense, concentrated fruit. Still compact and youthful, it needs time, but I love the powerful balance in this wine. Drink from 2028. 10 Years On retrospective.

Scented blackcurrant, tomato stalk, plum, leather. Upfront but microscopic tannic feel gives beautiful grip without intractability. Eloquent already. Such attractive fruit. Expertly integrated oak spice adds a flourish on the finish. (RH)

Inky depths to the colour, this is powerful, full of character. Grilled sandalwood oak notes are dominant on the attack, with the bitter almond and cracked black pepper on the finish not just welcome but essential to balance things out. Showcases the character of Troplong - concentrated, powerful, slow-ageing. Served both double decanted and a straight from bottle, and again the double decanted gives you a better impression of the complexity that is hidden within the waves of concentrated flavour. Needs another decade at least to really reveal itself. 100% new oak.
