Tasting notes
The 2016 Château Tour Maillet (Lagardère) is brilliant stuff and one seriously sexy, plump, flamboyant Pomerol that dishes out tons of pleasure. Plums, spiced cherries, chocolate, and hints of tobacco all define the bouquet. It’s medium to full-bodied, has loads of fruit, solid balance, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 15 years or more. It’s a winner well worth your time and money.

The 2016 Tour Maillet has a pretty bouquet of lifted red cherry and raspberry aromas, and the oak is nicely integrated. The palate is smooth in texture, with a slight Benedictine note – almost medicinal – suffusing the red fruit. It is not completely unattractive but I fear it might become trop by the second glass. Maybe this should have been picked a little earlier.
The 2016 Tour Maillet (Lagardere) is a powerful, dense wine. Blackberry jam, chocolate, leather, espresso, menthol, licorice and spice all flesh out in a powerful, virile wine that shows the more muscular side of Pomerol off to great effect. Élevage has helped bring together the wine's fruit density and structural elements, all of which it had from the very beginning. This is a terrific showing.
Exotic aromas of wild berries and green and black olives. So enticing. Full-bodied yet tight and composed with chocolate, berry and spice flavors that follow through on a long and deliberate finish. Shows greatness. Try from 2024.
