The 2016 La Petite Église has a cohesive and delineated bouquet that is quintessential Pomerol, mainly black fruit, wild hedgerow, truffle and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine grip, and is quite backward, and this is one Pomerol where I feel further time in bottle will lend more secondary flavours and personality. The 2016 La Petite Eglise has a lovely bouquet of wilted violet petals and incense flanking blackberry and raspberry scents. With aeration, there is just a hint of balsamic. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This feels fresh from start to finish. A fine-boned, precise Pomerol that delivers impressive closing precision. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The second wine of the estate is the 2016 La Petite Eglise, which is always 100% Merlot from the more gravelly parts of the vineyard. This is a beautiful 2016 that shows the house style in its ground herbs, tobacco, gravelly, earthy minerality, and sweet black cherry fruit. This medium to full-bodied, rounded, fleshy beauty is ideal for drinking over the coming 10-15 years.

Ch. l'Eglise-Clinet is one of the most unassuming wine estates in Bordeaux. You'd probably drive past it if you didn't have prior knowledge of its vinous output. There's no ostentatious gateway nor sweeping gravel drive.
