The 2016 La Louvière has a well-defined bouquet of brown-spice-laced red berry fruit, the oak nicely integrated and hints of rose petal developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with red fruit, but just as I found when I first tasted this in bottle, there is a nagging greenness that marks the back palate and lingers distastefully on the finish. Caveat emptor . Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Very lively Sauvignon on the nose. Fresh and well made. Pungent, though blind I’m not sure I’d definitely pick it as bordeaux. Sancerre style! Should cost €3.50 (ex cellar). (JR)
Also outstanding, the 2016 Château La Louvière offers a frontend-loaded, medium-bodied, elegant style as well as some classic Graves tobacco and earth intermixed with notes of currants, strawberries, and new leather. It has the purity of fruit that’s the hallmark of the vintage, rock-solid balance, and is already a delicious drink. It should keep nicely for 10-15 years.
About the producer
Wine has been made at this estate since the 1300s, but its modern history begins when the Lurton family purchased it in 1965. The property was in disrepair, but the Lurtons have restored the château, winery and vineyards.
