Planted on three acres (1.2 ha) in Red Hill South, on deep red basalt volcanic soils. The bunches were left for seven days before foot stomping at increasing vigour over six days, followed by malolactic fermentation in small French barriques. The wine was left on the lees for 12 months without racking. Pale garnet. Savoury and sappy on the nose. Very delicate with some evolution. Fine tannins – far from a simple sweetie. Pretty sophisticated – though certainly not cheap! (JR)

Pale ruby colored, the 2013 Hillcrest Road Pinot Noir offers delicate raspberries, pepper and cloves aromas with lavender and wild thyme nuances plus a bit of baking spices. The light to medium-bodied palate is savory/earthy in character with a solid backbone of firm, finely grained tannins and great freshness, finishing long with lingering herbal and mineral notes.

Very pale crimson. Still smells a bit simple – raspberry Spangles (hard candy). Still some fermentation aromas. A bit tough on the end. Ungiving. (JR)
